You won't always get someone to fall asleep as quick as that -- it depends on what their resistance is like. Sometimes, you need to carry it longer or they'll snap back awake. But the practice means you get better at resisting it too!
... it's better to just attack whoever's trying to put you to sleep though.

It's a Grass type move. I don't have any pokémon with me who can use it, but trying to learn how to absorb energy first might make things easier before moving onto dreams. [ That was his idea, but actually thinking about it like a normal person and not just naming pokémon moves because you're a nerd? ]

It doesn't matter what level you were at before! You need to learn the basics here until it becomes second nature, and then find a way that fits you.
I had to do the same thing here, as a trainer. I can't keep the creatures here in balls, so I found a way to let them live in their habitats and stay connected to them. And I hold the Champion title back home.
We just have to adapt to do the things we're passionate about.
